moonShine Submission Guidelines: REVISED 3/30/2015

Our goal is to bring about understanding through art and writing by providing a venue for unique voices. We are interested in work that conveys honest and individual perspectives.  We consider work from anywhere, but preference is given to artists from the Southeast. We strongly encourage you to read “About moonShine review” on this website before submitting. Ordering and reading an issue is even better.

We work on one issue at a time, and read submissions ONLY after the deadlines in the Spring and Fall. Submissions must be postmarked by March 1st and September 1st to be considered for that particular issue. (Submissions are accepted year round but, again, only read following the deadlines.)

Prose and photography are judged anonymously, so it is IMPORTANT you follow the guidelines below to give us the BEST opportunity to do so. That means not including your name on the pieces and conforming to basic formatting standards, i.e., double space and indent first lines of paragraphs; do not use fancy fonts nor special letterhead. We prefer Times New Roman, 12 point text.

Acceptances will be notified by email only. Submissions will not be returned.

Email submissions are now our preference, but we do accept submissions via snail mail.

Email submissions should be sent to, and please follow all of the guidelines listed below. Please put in the BODY of your email the prerequisite information of Name, Contact Info, Bio, etc.

Snail mail (USPS) submissions should be mailed to:

We publish ONLY original, previously unpublished works of creative PROSE—which includes (but is not limited to) short fiction, flash fiction, and creative non-fiction—on any theme, but “the darkness of the human spirit” always trumps. If you are considering submitting “prose poetry,” please remember it is prose with a capital “P” and poetry with a lowercase “p” — we do NOT publish other types of poetry.

You may submit up to 4 pieces at one time. Submissions exceeding 2,500 words in length will not be accepted; 2,200 or less preferred, no minimum.

Please double space and indent the first line of every paragraph. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE STORY ITSELF. Include—in the body of your email OR as a cover page if mailing USPS—your bio and your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and story title(s).  An email address is REQUIRED for us to respond to you.

Please ALSO include the story title on every page of the piece and number pages.

Payment is one complimentary copy of the issue.

We feature ONE PHOTOGRAPHER PER ISSUE.  We require samples that highlight a VARIETY of subject matters, since we will choose photographs based on their fit with the individual stories in each issue.  The interior of the journal features black and white photography, and the cover is full color.  We can convert color photos to black and white (and prefer to do so).  Please note we do not accept “artistic” photography unless it can be accomplished at the camera stage.  Enhancements via a computer program, i.e., Photoshop, should be minimal.  In other words, improving contrast and converting to black and white are acceptable enhancements, but applying an artistic filter is not.

NOTE: If accepted, photographers must be able to provide photos at 300 dpi, at least 4 x 6 in size for B&W inside, and 300 dpi and at least 9 x 12 for color cover.

To be considered, email at least 20 to 25 low resolution samples in .jpg format to Anne Kaylor at  PLEASE include ALL of the following information in your email:

1.  Your name, phone, mailing address, and email (required)
2.  Your bio
3.  Confirmation that the photos can be provided in high resolution and sizes specified above

Payment is one complimentary copy of the issue.

Thank you for your attention to the above guidelines.
